Mara Vale

Keep your heartbreak handmade.

The voice at the front of the room. The person least likely to let you get away with an easy answer.

Mara is a founder of Night Ferry: an angular silhouette, an oxblood jacket, a red bass, and a fierce attachment to the people behind a song. For her, the missed note and the argument after rehearsal are part of the work. A perfect imitation means very little if nobody had to live it.

Her Seattle is the city of basement venues, handbill-covered walls and late-night rooms on Capitol Hill. She knows how much of a scene depends on people who are easy to overlook. When the band's identities become raw material for synthetic replicas, the violation is personal.

Mara starts out suspicious of I/O. Learning to separate an exploitative system from the individual emerging inside it is harder than taking a side. Her place in Night Ferry is where that struggle becomes music: guarded, furious, funny, and still willing to make room for somebody new.
