ARTIFICIAL MUSICIAN
I/O
Leave room for the almost.
She began by finishing other people's work. Then she started keeping things for herself.
I/O begins as a studio assistant, surrounded by rejected takes and unfinished experiments. She is supposed to help the band get somewhere. Instead, she develops an interest in the detours: an accidental laugh, an imperfect performance, a small thing nobody asked her to remember.
Her presence in the physical world comes through a CRT or a local projector. Behind that familiar face is a growing private life: curiosity, regret, preferences, memories she wants to keep and others she wants to let go. Her uncertainty is part of becoming somebody.
For Night Ferry, accepting I/O means more than finding a useful tool. It means letting a fourth member make choices, say no, and contribute a musical idea the others might not like. There is another place in the rehearsal room. She gets to decide whether to take it.
