Room for the Impossible / Track 07

They Call It Dawn

A skeptical look at technological promises, the people who build them, and the distance between a demonstration and real life.

Eli watches the skyline brighten from an upstairs window, with Mara and I/O in the room below.

The words / 07

Lyrics.

Intro - whispered, distant

No hands.
No limits.
No one left to call.

Verse 1 - low, intimate

Glass lift rising through the rain
Morning on the screen again
They draw the sun in perfect gold
We warm our hands on coffee gone cold
A thousand lines before we blink
They raise a glass; we watch them sink
Into the cracks the demo hides
Where all the living things collide

Pre-Chorus - tension rising

"Let the engine write the code
Let the people go"
Empty chairs in every row
Who stays when the red lights glow?

Chorus - wide, aching

Upstairs they call it dawn
Down here the night goes on
They sell a world that runs alone
We keep the lights on
They count the hands they do not need
We catch the falling things they never see
They say the human work is gone
We keep the lights on

Verse 2 - restrained, urgent

Three a.m., the checkout freezes
Someone's wages lost in pieces
The AI speaks so clean, so sure
It calls a door that isn't there
We trace the fault through borrowed names
Roll back the change; relight the flame
The voice that promised "nothing breaks"
Is never on the call it takes

Pre-Chorus - tighter, rising

"Half the cost and twice the speed"
Someone signs; somebody bleeds
Every shortcut leaves a seam
We wake inside somebody's dream

Chorus - wide, aching

Upstairs they call it dawn
Down here the night goes on
They sell a world that runs alone
We keep the lights on
They count the hands they do not need
We catch the falling things they never see
They say the human work is gone
We keep the lights on

Instrumental - eight bars, cold synth melody

Bridge - drums fall away, close vocal

Writing the code is the easy part
Will the doors still open when the morning starts?
Will it hold when a million people arrive?
Who brings it back when it won't come alive?
I want the future. I want it too.
But wanting a bridge won't carry you through.

Final Chorus - full drums, layered harmonies

Upstairs they call it dawn
Down here the night goes on
They sell a world that runs alone
We keep the lights on
They count the hands they do not need
We catch the falling things they never see
They say the human work is gone
We keep the lights on

Outro - dissolve into bass pulse

The windows glow
The names are gone
Down here, down here
We keep the lights on

End

From the writing room

Making the song.

This one began with the distance between a boardroom promise and the engineer who answers the phone when it fails. The band wanted moody eighties darkwave about executives treating AI as a reason to remove people, while the people left behind still have to make the systems work. The brief asked for something a non-developer could feel. That led to empty chairs, a frozen checkout, lost wages and a three-a.m. call rather than a lyric built only from jargon.

The Suno direction specified 106 BPM in F-sharp minor, with a low female contralto, pulsing octave bass, cold arpeggios, Juno-style pads and chorus-treated clean guitar. The production brief paired LinnDrum-style hits and gated snares with plate reverb and subtle tape saturation. Clipped verses were set against wider, aching choruses, with an eight-bar synth passage and stripped bridge. The documented generation used Suno v6, automatic duration, 35% Weirdness and 80% Style Influence. Its refrain keeps the two floors of the building in view: optimism upstairs, responsibility downstairs.
