Room for the Impossible / Track 03

That Feeling Again

An aging builder rediscovers the joy of making things. AI can help get an idea moving, but judgment still matters.

Mara writes in a notebook with her bass across her lap. I/O appears on a CRT beside her.

The words / 03

Lyrics.

Verse 1

Used to lose my Saturdays
To a blinking little light
Making something out of nothing
Just to see it come to life
Then the years turned into tickets
Every fix became a chore
I was good at keeping up
I wasn't curious anymore

Pre-Chorus

Same old desk, a different pace
I've got that look back on my face
That idea I put away
Has a working screen today

Chorus

Oh, that feeling again
Hands on the keys and a head full of plans
A little less waiting, a little more spark
Something I made taking shape in the dark
Still got the scars, still know the game
You make me curious all over again
Oh, that feeling
That feeling again

Verse 2

Now I talk to my computer
Let a half-formed thought come through
AI gives me twenty answers
I can make a start with two
You can sound so very certain
With a function that won't run
I still have to know the difference
That's a different kind of fun

Pre-Chorus

Same old desk, a different pace
I've got that look back on my face

Chorus

Oh, that feeling again
Hands on the keys and a head full of plans
A little less waiting, a little more spark
Something I made taking shape in the dark
Still got the scars, still know the game
You make me curious all over again
Oh, that feeling
That feeling again

Two-bar synth turnaround

Bridge - stripped drums and bass, intimate vocal

That thing I kept imagining
Is a thing I'm trying out
I don't need to be nineteen
To get lost in this machine

Final Chorus - full groove, layered backing vocals

Oh, that feeling again
Hands on the keys and a head full of plans
A little less waiting, a little more spark
Something I made taking shape in the dark
Still got the scars, still know the game
You make me curious all over again
Oh, that feeling
That feeling again

Outro

One more change, then I'll come to bed
That's what I said
That feeling again

From the writing room

Making the song.

The song began with a lifelong love of computers. Making things had become tickets and maintenance, and AI was bringing some of the excitement back. The request also contained a firm boundary: keep it grounded, without turning enthusiasm into flattery. That became the song’s central balance. The narrator is curious again, but still knows that a confident answer can contain a function that will not run.

The musical direction was early-eighties new wave and New York post-disco dance-pop at 122 BPM. The prompt called for a playful female alto, springy synth bass, handclaps, shimmering chords and choppy clean funk guitar. The first arrangement aimed around 3:30. The band wanted something closer to three minutes, so the revision replaced the instrumental break with a two-bar turnaround, shortened the bridge and outro, and specified a clean final stop. The final setup used a custom 3:00 duration, 30% Weirdness and 75% Style Influence. That tightening matters: the rediscovered joy gets its hook, its reality check and its familiar promise to come to bed after one more change.
